Our History
The Kennedy-Donovan Center began in 1969 as
the result of a long and close relationship between Mrs. Luella
Hennessey Donovan and the Joseph and Rose Kennedy family of
Massachusetts.
After working for the Kennedys as a
private nurse for 30 years, including caring for their eldest
daughter, who suffered from severe disabilities, Mrs. Donovan embarked on a new career:
She earned a degree from Boston College and
began implementing her
vision of creating one of the first community-based educational and
therapeutic day programs for children with special needs. A three-year demonstration grant from the
Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation made the initial program possible.
In gratitude, Mrs. Donovan named the agency "The Kennedy Center
for Handicapped Children". In 1987, the organization was
renamed "Kennedy-Donovan Center, Inc." in recognition of its
founder.
Today, Kennedy-Donovan Center, Inc. is a multi-service
organization providing community-based services and supports to more
than 5,000 infants, children, adults and families throughout
eastern and south-central Massachusetts. Some of the many
